Lucile A. McCormick ((Chorus))

Miss Lucile A. McCormick, daughter of Leslie James and Luina May (Overing) McCormick, was born 17 April 1904 in North Dakota.  Lucile had one younger sibling, William, or Bill, born 1 October 1906, North Dakota. The brother and sister always had a close relationship, neither ever married.

L. J. McCormick, Lucile's father, was born 8 November 1876 in Minnesota. He married Luina Overing in North Dakota circa 1900-1903.  L. J. was a farmer although according to his World War I Draft Registration he was employed by Great Northern Railways as an "Ice Foreman."  In 1918 the family moved to Malta, Montana where L. J. once more took up farming as his occupation.

MALTA MAN DROWNS WHILE SON WATCHES
Malta, July 14. -- L. J. McCormick was drowned Saturday in Beaver creek, near the Beaver bridge on the Content road, about 25 miles from Malta. McCormick, his son Leslie and a friend had gone in bathing near the bridge. It is believed that McCormick was unable to swim. Beaver creek has been unusually high for past month.

McCormick apparently walked into one of the deep holes cut by the current, suddenly disappeared, not coming up again.

After fruitless attempts to find him his son started to town for help. On the road he met Under-Sheriff Jacobson on his way to Content, who went to the scene of the accident. Men going out to help in the seach met Jacobson returning with the body, which he had found standing upright in a deep hole. It was judged that McCormick had become mired.

Luina, born 22 April 1877 in Iowa, remained with her two children in Malta for several years after her husband's death. Lucile graduated from Malta Schools in 1922, obtained her teaching degree and over the next few years taught in Montana, Washington state and in Utah until in the late 1950's. Luina followed her children, living off and on with them, through the years. Bill joined the US Army and served overseas during World War II.
