Joy M. Cliffe (Clemow, Moore -Business Ed, Typing 1946-1962) VIEW PROFILE

Joy  M. Cliffe Clemow Moore, daughter of George I. (1874-1942) and Bertha Lucy (Cooper) (1873-1965) Cliffe, was born 26 February 1903 in Carson City, Montcalm County, Michigan.  She was already a well established high school teacher when she married Charles Lowe Clemow 31 August 1933 in Manhattan, New York.  Charles, born 27 November 1894 in Plymouth, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, was a World War I veteran.  He served with the 156th Air Squadron in the Meuse-Argonne defensive sector of France.  Sergeant Clemow was honorably discharged from military duty 30 June 1919 at Mitchell Field, Long Island, New York. 

 

 

By  about 1936 Joy began her teaching career with the Okemos School system where for the next 27 years she taught business courses, retiring in 1963.  Charles died suddenly 9 November 1956 in Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan.

OKEMOS MAN DIES OF SUDDEN ILLNESS

Charles Clemow, 62, of 2328 Mt. Hope rd., Okemos, was pronounced dead on arrival at Edward W. Sparrow hospital soon after noon Friday after he suffered a heart attack at his home.

Meridian township firemen were unable to revive the victim, who was in charge of the hardware department at Sears-Roebuck and Company.

Names of survivors, other than the widow, Mrs. Joy Clemow, and details of funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

Joy retired from a 40 year teaching career in 1963.  Between 1963 and 1967 she married widower Elsden Earl Moore.  Elsden was born 30 December 1908 in St. Johns, Clinton County, Michigan.  He married his first wife, Dama Jane Stead, in 1930 Ingham County.  Dama, born 1909, died in 1959.

TEMPE, AZ

Age 90, passed away December 29, 1999, at Friendship Village in Tempe, A.  He was born December 30, 1908, to Joshua and Pearl Moore in St. Johns, MI.  Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his first wife, Dam J. (Stead) Moore; sister, Lena Kathryn (Gamble); and brothers, Loyal and Howard.  Survived by his second wife, Joy M. (Cliffe) (Clemow) Moore; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Viola Moore of Houghton Lake, MI; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Gordon Metzger of Marshall, MI; grand-daughters, Diane (Dwight) Mauk of Webberville, MI, and Mary (Tim) Kamps of Rockford, MI; sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Leil Markley of Port Richey, FL.  Mr. Moore was employed by Melling Forging Company for 41 years and was supervisor in Quality Control when he retired in 1968.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 6, 12 Noon at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, with Dr. James N. Kent, Pastor, officiating.  Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.

Age 99, Passed away March 8, 2002, at Friendship Village in Tempe, AZ.  Mrs. Moore was born February 26, 1903, to George and Bertha Cliffe, in Caron City, MI.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Clemow, and her second husband, Elsden Moore.  Surviving are her step-children, Donald (Viola) Moore of Houghton Lake and Donna (Gordon) Metzger of Marshall; step-granddaughters, Mary (Tim) Kamps of Rockford, Diane (Dwight) Mauk and step-great-granddaughter, Erin Mauk both of  Webberville.  Mrs. Moore taught school for 40 years.  The last 27 years of her career were at the Okemos High School teaching business courses, retiring in 1963.

Joy and Charles Clemow were interred, as were Joy's parents, in Bloomer Cemetery, Carson City, Montcalm County, Michigan.  Elsden was interred with his first wife, Dama, in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, DeWitt, Clinton County, Michigan.
