Comment from Sherrie Paty Barber

After World War II my father turned his entrepreneurial eyes towards Okemos and a junk yard owned by a man named Crawford.  Mom agreed to the business buy and was willing to live in the back of the old block business building on Cavanaugh Road (now Jolly Road) temporarily while Dad got on his business feet.  My 2 sisters, Jackie and Carolyn, were elementary school age and for them this was a big adventure.  For Mom....well, the only way she would live in a big, old junk yard shop building was if Dad promised to build her a new home on the property.  Dad agreed.  But, after agreeing then found himself in a predicament.  There were no available construction people.  World War II had just ended and everything and everyone was in flux.  Building materials were scarce as were the skilled tradesmen needed to handle and work with the building of a new home.  About this same time Dad met an older Okemos man by the name of Harry Alden.  Mr. Alden was a carpenter and he wanted to work.  He and Dad struck a deal and the home at 2300 Cavanaugh Road was built.  Mom moved the family in before it was completed and was delighted.  I made my appearance on earth about that time!

Over the next several decades the Alden family was in and out of Dad's business life.  One of the son's was manager of a gas station Dad owned and a couple other sons worked part or full time for Dad at Paty's Auto Parts.  I clearly remember the bearded Mr. Alden in his overalls.  To this day I still possess a child sized stool and matching bookcase Mr. Alden made for me.

Interesting how families drift in and then out of our lives.  Without Mr. Alden the house I grew up in would not have been built....or would have been long delayed.
