Alice Jeanette Edgar (Smedley) - Class Of 1930 VIEW PROFILE

Alice Jeanette Edgar, daughter of Robert (1871-1938) and Amelia (Unruh) (1878-1930) Edgar, was born 26 January 1912 in Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan.  Alice's father was born in Germany and was a 48 year resident of Okemos.  Mr. Edgar was the foremen of Grand Trunk Railroad for 37 years.

 Alice graduated from Okemos High School in 1930.  She married Howard Dale Smedley 6 June 1936 in Fremont, Newaygo County, Michigan.

OKEMOS COUPLE WED AT FREMONT

OKEMOS  June 12 - Mr. and Mrs. Howard Smedley came directly to their new home in Okemos following their marriage last Saturday at Fremont.  Mrs. Smedley was formerly Miss Alice Edgar, daughter of Robert Edgar, a well known young woman in this community.

The young couple were united in marriage by the Rev. Stanley Thayer, formerly pastor in Okemos.  They were accompanied by Miss Mary Ann Edgar, sister of the bride and two of her intimate friends, Miss Jennie Becker and Miss Evlyn Unruh.  Mrs. Thayer served dainty refreshments after the ceremony at the Thayer home.

Mr. Smedley had purchased the home in Cedar Bend Heights, next to Verne Burgess, prior to his marriage and it was ready for immediate occupancy.

After Pearl Harbor Howard Smedley enlisted in the US Army 19 August 1942.  Prior to the war he was employed in Lansing at Fisher Body.  Later he worked for the State of Michigan.  Howard, born 28 February 1900 died 29 August 1969.

HOWARD D. SMEDLEY

Howard D. Smedley, 69, of 4852 Hillcrest Dr., Okemos, died Friday at a local hospital.  A native of Lansing and a resident of Okemos for 36 years, he had been employed in the property management division of the State Department of Administration for 13 years, retiring in 1967.  He also had been employed in Fisher Body Division for 20 years.  He was a veteran of World War II.

Mr. Smedley is survived by his wife, Alice; a daughter, Mrs. Steven Pierce of Okemos, and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Gorsline-Runciman East Chapel, with burial in Mr. Hope Cemetery.

SMEDLEY, ALICE J.

OKEMOS

Age 81, died July 6, 1993.  Born January 26, 1912 in Okemos.  Mrs. Smedley was a graduate of Okemos High School in 1930 and M.S.U. in 1935.  She was a Charter member of Okemos Community Church and a member of Circle #2 of the Woman's Society.  She was a member of the "State" Club, the Okemos Pioneers and was an avid Bridge player.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard D. (1969), Henry Edgar, Theodore Edgar, Harold Edgar and Bertha Aldrich.  Surviving are daughter, Suzanne (Dave) Bott of Perry; 2 grandchildren, Kelly Pierce of Chicago and Mathew Pierce of Lansing; 2 nephews, Dr. Richard Williams of Pentwater and Randy Williams of Seattle; niece, Gail (Ken) Foster of Kentwood; dear friend, A. Hilton Kiebler of Lansing,; sister, Mary Ann (Dick) Williams of Pentwater.  Funeral services will be held Friday, July 9, 2:30 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co., East Chapel, East Lansing, with the Rev. Charles D. Grauer, Pastor, Okemos community Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery.

There are two cemetery headstones for Howard.  One headstone is in Mt. Hope Cemetery and the other in Glendale Cemetery where Alice is interred.
