Stan Powell (1944-1998)


Stan died at his home in Raleigh, NC, apparently of a heart ailment. He was 54. A graduate of Michigan State, he worked in pharmaceutical sales for 27 years with Burroughs Wellcome. He retired from there in 1995 and was employed by Scienta Healthcare Education at the time of his death. An accomplished trumpeter since high school, he performed with the Raleigh Concert Band and Forest Hills Baptist Church music program. He also enjoyed golf, gardening, sports,and long walks with his wife and dog. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.

Stanley Wayne "Stan" Powell, Jr., son of Stanley Wayne Sr. (1918-1968) and Marjorie E. (1919-1975) Powell, was born 27 March 1944, Logan County, Ohio.  He graduated in 1962 from Okemos High School and later from Michigan State University. 

Stan died 25 May 1998, North Carolina and was interred Meadowbrook Cemetery, Lumberton, Robeson County, North Carolina.

STANLEY WAYNE "STAN" POWELL, JR.

RALEIGH, NC

Age 54, passed away at his home Monday, May 25, 1998.  Mr. Powell was born March 27, 1944 in Bellefontaine, OH, son of the late Stanley W. and Marjorie E. Powell.  He was a graduate of Okemos High School, Okemos, MI and Michigan State University. Mr. Powell and his family were very active members of Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh.  He loved the Lord and expressed his worship and service to Him through his music and Bible study.  Mr. Powell was employed by Scienta Healthcare Education, a Division of Sandler and Recht Communications, Inc.  He began his 27-year career with Burroughs Wellcome Co. In 1967 as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative and progressed with the company until his retirement in June 1995 ad Director, Advertising Services.  He was an accomplished trumpeter and enjoyed performing with the Trinity Baptist Church Brass Ensemble and Raleigh Concert Band.  He participated in many musical events in the Raleigh area.  His most recent performance was Memorial Day weekend with the Raleigh Concert Band where he played "Taps" solo at the National Cemetery in Raleigh.  In addition to his love for music, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening, sports, and long walks with his wife and their dog, "Annie".  Mr. Powell is survived by his loving wife, Christina Loizou Powell; two daughters, Lori Jen Powell of Raleigh and Tammi Lynn Powell of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; his brother, James Clemens Powell, his sister-in-law, Sally, niece, Amy, and nephew, Andrew, of Coral Springs, FL.  Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Carrie Pope Lee, and his sister-in-law, Helen Tisa Loizou, both of Raleigh.  Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday, May 29, 1998, at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh.  The family will receive friends, immediately following the service in the Church Parlor.  Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, in Meadowbrook Cemetery, Lumberton, NC, with Pastor Joe Bounds, First Baptist Church, Lumberton, officiating.

Rodney Ellis (Alumni Assoc. President) (1965)

A fine trumpet...I always looked up to him...a natural leader.  That's a horn silenced way before its time.  taps....
