Phyllis Arlene Woodworth (Hotaling) - Class Of 1941 VIEW PROFILE

Phyllis Arlene Woodworth, daughter of James H. (1883-1966) and Nellie Elizabeth (Thompson)(1886-1941) Woodworth, was born 23 July 1923 Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan.  She graduated from Okemos High School in 1941.  Phyllis married T.Sgt. Clarence Lemoin Hargrave, Jr. 18 March 1944 Polk County, Florida.

HARGRAVE - The promotion of Clarence L. Hargrave, jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hargrave, of 1115 East Kalamazoo street, from the rank of sergeant to that of staff sergeant, has been announced by Lt. Col. Ralph T. Wienbroer, commanding officer of a service group at Barksdale Field, La., where Sergeant Hargrave is stationed.  He enlisted May 29, 1942, and before being transferred to this field, was stationed at Albuquerque, N. M.  He is a member of the service group, and is at present on duty as an airplane mechanic.  Before entering the service, he was employed by the Stevenson & Bennett Hardware company, as a salesman.

James Woodworth, 1123 Hapeman street, announces the engagement and approaching marriage of his daughter, Phyllis, to Technical Sgt. Clarence Hargrave, jr., who is stationed at Lakeland Army Airfield, Lakeland, Fla.  Sergeant Hargrave is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hargrave, 115 East Kalamazoo street.  The wedding will be solemnized March 19, at Lakeland, Fla.

In 1955-1956 Clarence purchased McKinley Hardware in downtown Okemos from John McKinley.  John later became the US Postmaster in Okemos.  Clarence owned and ran the business for approximately the next 10 years moving it from downtown Okemos out onto Grand River Avenue (US-16), Okemos.  He then closed the enterprise and went to work for Capital City Lumber where he remained until his retirement in 1978.  Clarence and Phyllis moved to Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan in 1985 where Clarence died 13 August 1988.  Phyllis married Robert Hotaling (1918-2011).  She died 21 January 2017, Lansing, Ingham County.

Phyllis Hargrave Hotaling

Okemos
age 93, passed away on January 21, 2017. Born July 23, 1923 on a farm in Okemos, she attended Button, a one room school through the 8th grade. She graduated from Okemos High School in 1941. Phyllis then attended Acme Business College in Lansing followed by employment at Oldsmobile and East Lansing State Bank. Her next employment opportunity was as secretary of Edgewood Elementary School in Okemos. She retired after 22 wonderful years and then moved to Traverse City where she spent 13 years. She enjoyed swimming in the bay at dusk, biking around town with her beloved dog Jessie, and singing in the Traverse Bay Area Sweet Adelines. She returned to Lansing to be closer to her family. Phyllis loved animals, singing and playing the organ, a good game of cards, and especially spending time with her family. She was a fun, generous, loving mother and grandmother, who will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. Preceding her in death were husbands; Clarence Hargrave and Robert  Hotaling; and daughter Jacolyn Boughner. Phyllis is survived by daughters Jill (Dan) Richardson and Jan Jones (Duke Colgrove); Grandchildren Marc Richardson, Tracy (Chad) Urbain, Jessica (Jay) Thompson, and Kasey Jones; along with great-grandchildren Addison and Connor Thompson. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 6, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home 1730 E. Grand River, East Lansing, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Great Lakes Caring Hospice of Michigan, or First Church of Christ, Scientist 709 E. Grand River, E. Lansing, MI
