Gertrude Eoma Wheeler (Cook) - Class Of 1939

Gertrude Eoma Wheeler, daughter Percy Harold (1891-1969) and Gertrude Mary (Holdaway) (1889-1965) Wheeler, was born 16 October 1921 Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  She graduated in 1939 from Okemos High School.  Gertrude's parents were born in England.  Her father came to the United States in 1913 and was a US Army veteran of World War I.  Gertrude's  mother came to the US in 1915.  Percy Wheeler and Gertrude Mary Holdaway were wed 14 September 1920 in Calhoun County, Michigan.

Robert Wheeler, Gertrude's brother, graduated from Okemos in 1938 and served in the US Marine Corp during World War II.  Another brother, John, an East Lansing graduate, was in the Naval air force and died in a 1945 crash in the Hawaiian Islands.

Gertrude married Frederick George Cook 14 June 1943 Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.

WHEELER-COOK RITES SOLEMNIZED

The chapel of St. Paul's Episcopal church was the scene of the wedding Monday afternoon of Miss Gertrude Wheeler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy H. Wheeler, 208 Oxford road, East Lansing, to Pvt. Frederick G. Cook, United states coast artillery, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cook of Okemos.  Rev. Clarence Brickman officiated in the presence of members of the immediate families.

The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, was attired in an aquamarine street-length dress and carried a colonial bouquet.  She was attended by her two sisters, Patricia and Molly.  They were dressed in white and wore corsages of pink carnations.  The bridegroom was attended by Peter Wheeler, brother of the bride.

After a wedding trip in northern Michigan, Private Cook will report to Camp Davis, N.C., and Mrs. Cook will reside with her parents for the present.  Both the bride and groom are graduates of Michigan State college.

Frederick, born 11 June 1920 Indiana, was a World War II veteran.  He died 11 January 1984 Contra Costa County, California.  Gertrude died 15 June 2003 Vallejo, Solano County, California.
