Frederick Julius "Fred" Kaltenegger - Class Of 1944

Frederick Julius "Fred" Kaltenegger, son of Julius C. (1902-1964) and Frieda (Bleisteiner) (1902-1955) Katenegger, was born 28 July 1926 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.  Fred was a 1st generation American of Swiss and German immigrant parents.

Mrs. Julius Kaltennegger, who teaches naturalization classes at the Y.W.C.A., told of her work with foreign-born Lansing residents.

"No country offers as much to the individual as the United States of American," she said, and she pointed out that more people are seeking citizenship than ever before.

Mrs. Kaltenegger came to this country in 1924 to be married in Detroit.  Mr. Kaltenegger had preceded her from Switzerland by two years to become established here  before sending for his fiancé.  They were married immediately upon her arrival from St. Gallen.

After 10 years in Detroit, the family came to Lansing where Mr. Kaltenegger is a bridge engineer with the state highway department.  Their two oldest children, Joan and Fred, attend Michigan State college.  Karen, the youngest is six years old.  They reside at 4630 S. Hagadorn rd., East Lansing.

Fred was a 1944 graduate of Okemos High School.  He was also a talented violinist.

Okemos, May 24 - Baccalaureate services for the senior class of Okemos high school will be held Sunday evening at 8 o'clock, Rev. Paul Vincent to be the speaker.  The march will be played by Miss Jean Fogle and Miss Phyllis MacAllen.  The invocation and benediction will be given by Rev. Harold Jayne and a violin solo by Fred Kaltenegger.

The same year as graduation Fred was drafted into the US Army and World War II.

MASON DRAFTEES LEAVE SUNDAY FOR INDUCTION

Mason, Nov. 22 - Fifteen men from Ingham draft district No. 1 have been instructed by the local selective service board to appear for induction on Sunday afternoon, November 26, at Mason.  They will go by bus to Jackson, and from there by train to Chicago for their respective assignments.

Fred was reported to have done translation work during the Nuremberg Trials.  Numerous kinds to translators were needed during that era and Fred was bi-lingual.  Fred returned to the US and entered Michigan State college. According to a short news clip in the State Journal, Fred was married and brought his bride to the US.

Mrs. Fred Kaltenegger is a patient in the Edward W. Sparrow hospital under treatment for physical conditions resulting from her war experiences, having been confined to a concentration camp.

Reportedly  Fred, after the death of both parents, legally changed his surname to Kalt.  Social Security Death Index listed his surname as Kalt and his death 27 November 1996 Houston, Harris County, Texas.
