Edythe May Smith (Blackledge) - Class Of 1936

Edythe May Smith (Blackledge)

Edythe May Smith, daughter of Richard H. (1892-1970) and Maude (Manning) (1903-1987) Smith, was born 6 May 1919 Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.  Edythe graduated as valedictorian of her 1936 senior class at Okemos High School.  On 25 September 1937, St. Johns, Clinton County, Michigan, she married Robert Pershing "Per" Blackledge, son of Frank Stanley Blackledge, a former Superintendent of Okemos Schools.

The couple was married for 61 years and had 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters.  Edythe died 4 March 1996 Ovid, Clinton County.  Per, born 20 May 1918, died 6 May 2010.  Edythe and Per were interred Laingsburg Cemetery, Laingsburg, Shiawassee County, Michigan.

LAINGSBURG

Age 76, died Monday, March 4, 1996 at Ovid Healthcare Center.  Edythe was born in Lansing on May 6, 1919 the daughter of Richard H. and Maud (Manning) Smith; graduated from Okemos High School; and married Robert Pershing Blackledge in St. Johns On September 25, 1937.  She worked at Oldsmobile for 16 years; then was an Assistant Cook at Laingsburg Schools, retiring in 1981.  A member of the Laingsburg United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 25 years,; member of the United Methodist Women's Society; and Officer of the Women's Bowling Assoc.  Surviving are:  her husband, Robert; 2 daughters, Mrs. Elaine (Duane) Wagner of Jackson and Mrs. Carol (Donald ) Wagner of Laingsburg; 2 sons, Stanley (Judy) Blackledge of Laingsburg and Dean (Lilah) Blackledge of Hanover, MI; 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Arlene (Bill) Shaw of Vermontville; a brother, Kerwin (Nita) Smith of Grand Ledge; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Cozie Smith of Blanca, CO.  Predeceased by a brother, Robert.  Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Nelson-House Funeral Homes, Laingsburg, with Pastor Bob Anderson officiating.  Burial in Laingsburg Cemetery.
