Fern H. Moore (Slagh) - Class Of 1911

Fern H. Moore, daughter of Howard W. (1862-1941) and Edith C. (Hewitt) (1870-1940), was born 30 June 1896, Michigan.  She graduated in 1911 from Okemos High School.  Fern married John C. Slagh 30 June 1921, Mason, Ingham County, Michigan.  They had 2 children, Howard and Audrey.

John, born 31 October 1895, Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan, was killed in an auto accident 9 February 1940, Mason, Ingham County.  John lost control of his car on icy pavement and slammed head-long into an on-coming truck.  In the car with John was his mother-in-law, Edith Moore, who was also fatally injured.

TWO RESIDENTS OF MASON DIED IN CAR CRASH

SUCCUMB IN HOSPTIAL

Mason, Feb. 10 - John C. Slagh, 45, Mason automobile dealer, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Edith Moore, 71, also of Mason, were fatally injured late Friday afternoon when Slagh's car skidded on the ice and crashed head-on into a truck three miles south of here on US-127.

Slagh, a member of the firm of Hall-Slagh, Inc., had taken his daughter, Audrey, to a nearby town and was returning with Mrs. Moore at the time of the accident.  Passing motorists picked up the two injured persons and brought them to the Corsant hospital here, where Mrs. Moore died at 7:15 o'clock and Mr. Slagh about 8:30.

Harold Drumond of Jackson, driver of the truck was not injured.

Slagh formerly was chief of the Mason fire department and is a past commander of Browne-Cavender post of the American Legion.  He is survived by the widow, Fern; a son, Howard, and the daughter.  Mrs. Moore is survived by the husband, Howard, and three children; Mr. Slagh, Mrs. Carl Wolf of Wheatfield township, and Asa Moore of Onondaga.

Funeral arrangements were being made Saturday.

John, a World War I veteran, was interred Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason.

Fern never remarried.  She raised her son and daughter and had a career as a school teacher in Ingham County.  Son Howard, born 1924, died 1972.  Howard was a World War II and Korean Conflict veteran.  Fern died 30 March 1981, Lansing, Ingham County and was interred with John and Howard in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason.

Died March 30, 1981.  Mrs. Slaugh (newspaper typo) was a former teacher in Mason and Leslie High Schools.  She was a member of Mason United Methodist Church and Mason College Club.  She is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs. H,. B. (Audrey) Oren, Jr. of Guilderland, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Betty I. Gillison of Lansing and grandchildren, John and Cindy Slagh of Lansing.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 2, 1981, 3 p.m. at the Ball Dunn Chapel., Gorsline-Runciman Co., Mason with the Rev. George R. Grettenberger, Pastor of Mason United Methodist Church officiating.  Interment in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason.
