Margaret VanAlstine (Bement) - Class Of 1935

Margaret VanAlstine, daughter of William Erbin (1884-1944)  and Florence Adella (Bush) (1884-1944) VanAlstine, was born 5 April 1918, Michigan.  She graduated in 1935 from Okemos High School.  Margaret married Samuel James Tomlinson.  The couple had 2 sons, Allen and William, and divorced.  Samuel, born 27 July 1914, Ingham County, Michigan was an Ingham County Deputy Sheriff and at one time was a candidate for County Sheriff.  Samuel succumbed to a heart attack 29 January 1956 and was interred Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason, Ingham County.

Margaret married Rex Carisle Bement.  Rex, born 23 July 1919, Ingham County, was a World War II Navy veteran.  They were divorced.  Rex died 1 August 2004, Ingham County.

Margaret was closely associated with the family business, VanAlstine Packing Company for many years.  She and her sister Grace, also an OHS graduate, ran the firm after their father's death in 1944.

Margaret died 21 Jun 1984, Lansing.

MARGARET BEMENT VANALSTINE, 66

Margaret Bement VanAlstine of East Lansing, daughter of the founder of the VanAlstine Packing Co., died Thursday.  She was 66.

A Lansing native, VanAlstine has been semi-retired" from the firm which her father, William, started more than 50 years ago, said her son, Allen James Tomlinson of Mason.

The company is now owned by Harold Hoffman, son-in-law of the firm's founder.

VanAlstine was a member of the Okemos community church and the Okemos Chapter No. 29 of the Eastern Star.

In addition to son, Allen, she is survived by another son, William Tomlinson of Houghton lake and a sister, Grace Hoffman of East Lansing.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Gorsline-Runciman East Chapel, East Lansing.
