HARKNESS, Rex L. Rex L. Harkness of Ashford died peacefully in his home on April 20 at age 76. Born in Michigan, he grew up on a farm, graduated from Albion College and the University of Notre Dame. He taught Mathematics at Eastern Connecticut State University from 1968-1992. He loved nature and working with his hands. In retirement he and his family built five houses. He lovingly tended his Ashford property where he cut and sold cordwood. Deeply ethical, kind, gentle, humorous, and strong, his passing is mourned by his wife of 53 years, Sue, four children, Julia, Joe, Laura, and Sarah, nine grandchildren, and a sister Patricia and brother William. He said his greatest pride was that all of his children had earned advanced degrees, although characteristically claimed no credit for it.
