Class of 1916

State Journal, 21 June 1916

Note: all the Ingham County students are lumped into "normal school graduates."  There were only 24.  At least one Meridian (township) student is named.

“Normal School" graduation was what we refer to as HS graduation.  I assume that normal school education in Ingham County was above 8th and may have been actually through 12th.  I've not been able to get this totally accurate from newspaper articles.  Normal School education definitely was above 8th! Schooling and graduation was at a county level and there were a few students who could or did graduate, as noted by the write up.  Students were lumped together from all over Ingham County and may had to live away from home in order to attend Normal School.  This was quite an accomplishment.  All the graduates this year (1916) were women and all were hired to teach school (except Helen McCreary who was not yet age 18).  My grandmother (born and bred in TN) was VERY proud that she had attended (did not graduate) Normal School and later taught school.  I'm not sure where Ingham County's Normal School was located.  Haven't found that tidbit in Lansing State Journal either.
