Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Shipley (Harte) - Class Of 1940

Mary Elizabeth Betty Shipley (Harte)

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Shipley, daughter of William Albert (1876-1934) and Clara (Estes) (1883-1942) Shipley, was born 18 July 1922 Clinton County, Michigan.  She graduated in 1940 from Okemos High School.  On 24 August 1940 St. Johns, Clinton County, Betty married Gareth M. Harte.

Mr., and  Mrs. Gareth M. Harte of Bath will be honored Sunday at an open house reception at their home, marking their 35th wedding anniversary.  They were married Aug. 24, 1940.  The Hartes are the parents of four children and have six grandchildren.  They also have 13 foster children and nine foster grandchildren.

Gareth, born 23 June 1919, died 8 September 1994.  Betty died 7 November 2000.  Gareth and Betty were interred Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath, Clinton County.

HARTE, GARETH M.

BATH

Age 75, died September 8, 1994.  Born June 23, 1919 in Lansing, Mr. Harte was a lifelong resident and farmer in bath; worked for the State of Michigan and retired from Motor Wheel with over 25 years of service.  He was preceded in death by a son, Robert and parents, Octa and Shirley Harte.  Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary E.; 1 daughter, Janeth K. Wildt (of Ceramics by George) of Bath; 3 sons, Gareth E. (Gayle) and Laurence R. (Diane) both of Lansing, and Thomas L. Harte of Bath; 7 grandchildren; 1 sister, Joyce Sodman of Grand Rapids; and dear friend, Ed Hutchings of Bath.  Funeral services will be held Monday, September 12, 11:30 a.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel with the Rev. Steve Weinberger, Pastor of First United Methodist Church of St. Johns, officiating.  Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath.

BATH

Age 78, died November 7, 2000.  Born July 18, 1922 in St. Johns.  Mrs. Harte, along with her husband, Gareth, started "Grandparents Against Child Abuse."  She served as a 4-H Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and had been on the first all girl softball team in the State of Michigan for 4-H.  She was a member of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA), Delta Alpha Chapter since 1966, Perry Rebekah Lodge since 1943, Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and the Lansing R.E.A.C.T. Team.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Gareth M. Harte (1994), son Robert Harte (1943), parents and 5 brothers and 1 sister.  Surviving are her daughter, Janeth K. Wildt (Of Ceramics by George) of Bath; sons, Gareth G. (Gayle) of Lansing, Thomas L. of Bath and Laurence R. (Diane) of Lansing; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; many foster children and their families; sister, Eva G. McBain of Oldtown, FL; and dear friend, Ed Hutchings.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 11, 9 a.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt with the Rev. Steven Weinberger, Pastor of the First Methodist Church of Lansing, officiating.  Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill cemetery, Bath.
