Gil Conklin - Class Of 1965

Gilbert Conklin died last week!

His brother, Dan '61, will send his obit shortly

Gilbert R. Conklin, son of Leon Thomas (1914-2002) and Clara Elizabeth (Rohrer) (1918-2004) was born 17 January 1947 Michigan.  He graduated in 1965 from Okemos High School and furthered his education with graduation from the Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine.  Gilbert married Patricia 14 December 1991 Sevier County, Tennessee.  Patricia died 25 April 2014 Cocke County, Tennessee.

Dr. Conklin succumbed to metastatic cancer 19 June 2017 Greeneville, Greene County, Tennessee

Dr. Gilbert R. Conklin of Cosby passed away June19, 2017 at Laughlin Healthcare Center in Greeneville. Dr. Conklin graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Science and practiced veterinary medicine in Milwaukee, WI, Hopkinsville, KY, and St Petersburg, FL. He then moved to Cosby where he served as Medical Director of the Dr. Carol Hood Memorial Animal Shelter in Newport. Dr. Conklin was an active member of Liberty Church of Cosby and an avid bowler. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Jewel Conklin and his parents Leon and Clara Conklin. He is survived by his only brother Daniel Conklin of Piscataway NJ, his nephew Russell Conklin of Alexandria VA and his niece Lara Conklin of Westlake Village, CA, great nieces and myriads of friends and neighbors in Cosby and Newport, his “Extended” family. A memorial service will be held at Liberty Church of Cosby (3541 Cosby Hwy across from Carver’s Apple Orchard) on Sunday, June 25 at 6PM. All are welcome. Contributions in his memory can be made to Liberty Church of Cosby or the City of Newport Animal Control which is moving to 219 E Main St, Newport, TN 37821, on July 1, 2017.

Dr. Conklin was born on January 17, 1947 and passed away on Monday, June 19, 2017.

Dr. Conklin was a resident of Tennessee.

Conklin graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Science.

A memorial service will be held at Liberty Church of Cosby 3541 Cosby Hwy across from Carvers Apple Orchard on Sunday June 25 at 6PM. All are welcome.

Contributions in his memory can be made to Liberty Church of Cosby or the City of Newport Animal Control which is moving to 219 E Main St Newport.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr. Gilbert Conklin. He will be sadly missed by our Shelter family and everyone who knew him. Dr. Conklin was an extraordinary person. He dedicated many volunteer hours to help the animals here and went above and beyond the call of duty. Our deepest condolences to his family."

Anne Harvey (Smith) (1965)

This is sad news.  I always liked Gil.  He sat behind me in an English class and used to tell me he stared at the curls in my hair when class became dull.  Good sense of humor.  From his obit it sounds as though he had a good and fruitful life.  Bon Voyage, Gil.  I hope you receive many rewards on the other side.  Anne (Harvey) Smith

Marcia Johnson (Skelton) (1965)

I always liked Gilbert! He was very kind and intelligent. I think he was probably a wonderful vet & a nice husband . It really does look like he had a very giving and interesting life!!!!! A GREAT and positive  contributor to the human race and animal kingdom!!!!!

Bev Smith (Holt) (1965)

Very sad about Gilbert. We passed his home going and coming from Forest Hills. He was always smart. For years he was a paper boy delivering the papers early in the morning. Smart and work ethic too.  Obituary describes a life well lived. My sympathy to Dan and the family. Bev Holt
