Robert J. Jacoby - Class Of 1966 VIEW PROFILE

Robert J. Jacoby

Robert Jacoby's obituary in the Washington Post.

November 2, 2011

Robert J. Jacoby, 63, who had been a vice president of Lennar Corp., a national housing developer, died of pancreatic cancer Oct. 27 at the Washington Home hospice in the District.

The death was confirmed by his sister, Susan Jacoby.

Mr. Jacoby, a resident of the District for more than 40 years, worked in the housing development industry for most of his professional life.

Before joining Lennar in 2005, Mr. Jacoby was senior vice president of Kettler, a firm specializing in housing in Washington, Maryland and Virginia; vice president of Congressional Mortgage Corp.; and an executive with several other housing-related businesses.

Robert James Jacoby was born in Chicago, and he grew up in Lansing, Mich. While attending Georgetown University in the late 1960s, he worked as an accountant for the Communications Satellite Corp. (Comsat).

Although he eventually moved from accounting to the housing business, his talent for numbers was a constant throughout his career. Like his father, who owned an accounting firm in Lansing, and his uncle Oswald Jacoby, an international tournament bridge champion and a bridge columnist, he was described by his family as a “human calculator” who could add five-column figures in his head.

His high school accomplishments were legendary.  With a keen mind and practical sense, he served as the Student Judge for academic violations.

His marriage to Eve Moscicki ended in divorce. Survivors include two daughters, Alexandra Jacoby and Anna Jacoby, both of Washington; his mother, Irma Broderick Jacoby of East Lansing, Mich.; and a sister.

Editor Note: Bob's sister is Susan Jacoby, Okemos Class of 1963.  Bob's Mother, Irma Jacoby died just a week after Bob on Nov. 10, 2011. Obituary for Irma Jacoby from the Lansing State Journal follows.

Irma Broderick Jacoby East Lansing Age 90, a leader of critical care volunteers at Sparrow Hospital for more than 20 years, died Thursday, November 10, at Sparrow Hospice House of congestive heart failure. Mrs. Jacoby was the wife of Robert Jacoby, longtime president of the Lansing accounting firm Simplified Bookkeeping and Tax Service. She served as the company's human resources director throughout the 1970's. After Mr. Jacoby's death in 1986, Mrs. Jacoby began what was for her a second career as a volunteer at Sparrow Hospital. She served as president of the TLC Critical Care Lounge board of directors many times. When she resigned from the group because of worsening health in the spring of 2010, TLC Critical Care President Sharon Burrell noted that since 1987, Mrs. Jacoby had worked 312 hours a year in the critical care lounge, while the group only requires volunteers to work 50 hours a year. Irma Broderick was born in Harvey, IL, on January 4, 1921, the daughter of James L. and Minnie Rothenhoefer Broderick. After graduating from the University of Illinois at Champaign, she moved to Chicago and took her first job in the personnel department of the old Carson Pirie Scott department store. She met her future husband, as so many young couples met during World War II, at a USO dance. The Jacobys had been married 41 years when he died of lung cancer in 1986. Mr. Jacoby's only wish was to die at home and Mrs. Jacoby cared for him in their apartment for several months before his death. Mrs. Jacoby loved people-watching in New York's Rockefeller Center and Central Park, listening to Frank Sinatra recordings and attending some of his concerts in person, debating politics and reading. A longtime resident of Okemos, Mrs. Jacoby lived at Burcham Hills Retirement Center for the past three years and was active on volunteer boards there. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Jacoby of New York City and two granddaughters, Alexandra S. Jacoby and Anna S. B. Jacoby of Washington, DC. A memorial service for Mrs. Jacoby will be delayed until January as a result of the recent death of her son, Robert, in Washington. Further information about the memorial date will be published in early January. On-line condolences may be made at www.greastlansing.com
