QUICK ACTION PREVENTS TRAIN WRECK

Baggageman Bernard K. Young, 35, pulled the emergency brakes in time to prevent a disaster Saturday as the Motor City Special train from Chicago sped though Dearborn with a broken wheel.

"Young's quick thinking saved the 92 passengers from serious injury," said Stanly Ligewski, 51, Detroit superintendent of the Michigan Central Railroad.

The broken wheel was on the first coach of the train which included two locomotives, a baggage car, two coaches and five Pullmans.

"The car did not leave the tracks but tore off the rail-braces for about a mile before Young could apply the brakes," Ligewski said.

The train stopped 5,000 feet east of Greenfield in Dearborn.

Viola died 17 October 2007.  Bernard died 11 August 2009 Jackson County, Michigan.  Bernard and Viola were interred Roseland Memorial Gardens, Jackson County.
