In Memoriam

Wendell Taber - Class Of 1959

Wendell Taber

Wendell Gary Taber class of 1959, 84, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on November 1, 2025.

Born in Lansing, Michigan, Gary lived a full and meaningful life. He attended high school at Okemos High School in Lansing, Michigan and graduated in 1959. After high school he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as an Air Policeman and was stationed at Ramey Air Force Base in Isabela, Puerto Rico, an experience that remained an important part of his life story.

He was known for his love of working with electronics, building R/C airplanes, home construction and home maintenance projects, motocross racing, and recreational travel on the open road. His passion for driving led him to a long career of truck driving, eventually followed by his final role as a school bus driver for Durham School Services, transporting high school and middle school students for the Huntsville City School District.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Mary Taber, brother, Richard Taber, and his son, Charles Gary Taber. Gary is survived by his daughter, Trish Thompson (Brett) and his longtime school friend and best companion, Beverly Van Stee class of 1959. Gary and Beverly shared their lives, a deep love of dogs, and a passion for travel until a few years before his passing.

He will be missed by his extended family and by the many dear friends he made throughout his life, including those he met during his years as a school bus driver. He will be remembered for his generous heart for helping others, his sharp wit, freedom and the love of his country.

No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite dog rescue.

From the family: "After moving to Huntsville, AL from the state of Washington, Gary continued driving big trucks over the road, being gone for a week at a time. He did that for several years and then traded that job for one driving a school bus which he enjoyed for many more years until he retired about 4 years before his death. In his spare time, he enjoyed seeing the country in his motorhome, flying model planes and was starting to collect model train paraphernalia. Gary had not been in good health for several years."
