Comments about life and living

50 years .... dang!

I have not gone far from the nest. I'm still married to Marcia, and we live out on South Dobie
Rd. (Mason address/Okemos schools). We love our acreage/woods/gardens/trails/pool--lots
to do here--it's become both hobby and career. We raised our three great kids right here. Our
oldest, Molly, is 40 and has three children ages 8, 5, and 3 (boy, boy, girl). Annie is 37 and has
one boy age 5, a girl age 2 and one of undetermined gender arriving this winter. Our youngest,
Tommy, is 32 and has a 2-year-old son (so far). I hate to mention this, but I'm quite certain that
my kids and grandkids are superior to all others. It's not even open to debate.

I attended M.S.U. (twice) and settled on an education degree the second time around. I'm now
retired, but professionally I spent 22 years in a multi-age 4th/5th grade classroom--what a
wonderful experience. I was once told that in retirement you will wonder how you ever had time
to work-•so true. I continue to teach Kids' College at M.S.U. each summer. It's a two-week
summer science program for 9 and 10-year-olds--very fun

School Stories

Trying to choose "memorable" memories from O.H.S. times is tough. When Linda suggested
this possibility, the first thing I remembered was the night that pep band had an early September
practice session in the band room. Stan, Dan, Breck, me .... all there early. Mr. Mueller, not so
much. As we waited, of course we had lots of ideas, the most promising being to duck down
behind the bench beside the band room door, and surprise Don. I cannot remember whose idea
this was, but it met little resistance, so culpability should be equally shared. Anyway, we ducked
down ... Don arrived and was fooling with the door key when, in unison, we all popped up and
shouted. The handful of papers and sheet music he was carrying shot straight up in the air,
and, with a look of sheer terror on his face, Mr. Mueller shrieked (not kidding here), "GOOD
LORD!!!!!". I guess the "good Lord" must have been tuned in, because Mr. Mueller did NOT
die of a heart attack on the spot. I'm not sure why, but he didn't punish any of us, maybe
because three of his section-first chairs were culprits.
Other memories are of good friends, good times and basketball (I'm still playing/managing/
coaching in a Lansing City League--we are 79 and 1 over the past 4 years ... great fun, and I can'.t
believe my body still responds--sort of).
There are lots of other things I could mention, but most of it is classified, so you know what I'd
have to do if I told.
