Comments about life and living

(Posted 6/17/2023 by Laurel Winkel OHS'68: I came across a letter from Doug, dated June 16, 1998, written in advance of our 30th reunion.)

Dear Chieftains,
I had such a great time at the twenty-fifth reunion that it makes it that much harder to miss the thirtieth. I trust you'll all have a great time getting re-acquainted and I look forward to reading all about it.
Not much has changed for me since 1993. Margaret and I have now been married 23 years and still live in Half Moon Bay, California two blocks from the ocean. We have a card and gift shop lo these thirteen years. We also do letterpress printing on old presses right in the shop. Margaret designs cards and does the buying for the store and I do the printing and keep the books.
Our son Robert, almost 19, just finished his first year at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. He says he likes school but can't take the hot, muggy weather. He doesn't mind the winters.
Our lives are crowded with incident. For instance, every morning before opening the store I play cribbage at the local donut shop. Last summer one of my partners, Dave, got a "29" hand and we were written up in the local weekly paper. I'm just now learning to deal with the fame. Margaret and I take long walks on the beach after dinner, are members of book clubs, do a modicum of church work, occasionally explore little towns in California, love movies, and every Friday night in the summer we drive to Santa Cruz (50 miles south) to hear oldies bands in free concerts on the beach with such groups as The Kingsmen, The Shirelles, Jefferson Starship, The Surfaris, Jan and Dean, The Coasters, The Drifters, Johnny Rivers (Mike Wiseman's favorite singer in High School) and others.
If you're ever in the area, give us a call. We'd love to see you.
Doug Stow
