On the evening of January 15, 2026, Michael Nichols Barnett class of 1980, was found peacefully deceased in his home in Laingsburg, Michigan. He was 63 years old.
Michael Barnett was born in Lansing, Michigan on July 13th, 1962. His parents were Lee and Josephine Barnett. He is survived by his sister, Brenda Vogt.
Mike graduated from Okemos Highschool in 1980 and went on to receive an Associates Degree in Applied Science in Refrigeration, Heating & Air Conditioning at Ferris State in 1982. He had over 30 years of experience working in the HVAC industry.
Mike married Rachel Putnam in 1994, and they later divorced in 2003. He is survived by their two children: his number one son, Drew Barnett, age 28, and his favorite daughter, Jennifer Barnett, age 25. Mike never remarried.
Mike will be remembered for his consistently kind demeanor, quick witted humor and unwavering love for his children. He had many hobbies that connected him to his community, including mountain biking, motorcycles and deer hunting. He was also known for documenting everything and everyone on his camcorder-memories that are now deeply cherished by his children. Mike was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service is being planned for the spring, to be held outdoors where Mike loved to be. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements have been finalized. Contributions toward the service are welcome and greatly appreciated.
