PILOT DIED IN OHIO CRASH

LANSING MAN TRIES TO HOOK BANNER, LOSES CONTROL OF PLANE

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio -- A 20-year-old Lansing man was killed Sunday when the plane he was piloting crashed shortly after takeoff, the State Highway Patrol said.

Gerald E. Hause, a 1991 graduate of Okemos High School, was the only person aboard the plane when it crashed about 8:50 p.m. in a field at the Lost Nation Airport, said Shirley Wozniak of the highway patrol's Chardon post.

Hause was piloting the plane for American Air Ads in Toledo before heading for the Grand Prix of Cleveland, his mother, Carol Hause said.  He would fly to Ohio from Capital City Airport, then fly back to Lansing, where he had an apartment, his father, Gerald Huase said.

He was trying to hook an advertisement banner to the tail of the plane when it stalled and veered to the left, Wozniak said.  Hause tried to regain control of the plane, but it crashed nose-first into the field, she said.

A pilot has to fly slightly over two poles close to the ground to catch the banner with a hook on the plane, Gerald Hause said, Hause would not have known whether he had hooked the banner until he was airborne, he said.

Hause died at 9:58 a.m. at Cleveland Metropolitan Hospital, officials said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, Wozniak said.  The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

Willoughby is about 10 miles northeast of Cleveland.

Hause had been flying planes since age 14 and had a commercial license and multiengine instructor rating, his mother said.

"He was an accomplished pilot," Carol Hause said.  "We don't know what happened."

The Lansing Community College business student also was a member of Wings of Mercy, a group that helps people who need to be transported to other states for emergency treatment.

"He had left a message on our machine saying, "Mom, I just helped a 4-year-old girl and she's going to be OK," Carol Hause said, referring to her son's Saturday trip to Pennsylvania to help a sick girl.

David Wagner, Hause's instructor, said his student had wanted to be a commercial pilot.

"He was an accomplished pilot," Wagner said.  "He started gliding when he was 14.  By the time I got him, he was 16 and he was good."

Anne Hopwood, a friend of the family, said Hause was a dedicated flier.

"He loved it," she said.  "He absolutely craved flying."

Also surviving are his brother, Jonathan.
