Hilda Taylor (Hawkins)

Hilda Mae Hawkins class of 1949

March 25, 1932 – December 15, 2025

Hilda Mae Hawkins, aged 93, passed away surrounded by her beloved children on December 15th, 2025. She was born March 25, 1932, to Byron and Leota Taylor of Hadley, Michigan.

Hilda graduated from Okemos High School in 1949 and went on to study Physical Therapy at Michigan State University. Following her education, On July 4th, 1952, Hilda met the love of her life, Durwood Duane Hawkins, on the beach at Grand Haven, Michigan. They were married in 1955.

Hilda was truly the heart of her family, creating a home filled with love, understanding, and warmth. Her artistic spirit shone through in the beautiful crafts she made: sewing and knitting treasures that she shared with others and even turned into a small business. Christmas was especially magical under her guidance, as she led the family in crafting festive decorations and traditions that will be cherished for generations. Hilda’s generosity extended beyond her home; she served as President of the Okemos Community Church Women’s Society, where she found joy in organizing rummage sales and fostering community spirit.

Her kindness and gentle wisdom touched everyone she met. Hilda formed strong, lasting friendships wherever she lived, naturally bringing people together and nurturing bonds that endured. She was known for her thoughtful listening, creating a household where all felt deeply loved and understood. Hilda delighted in hosting family gatherings, keeping loved ones close, and always had a sweet treat on hand to share. Her curiosity and intellect were evident in her love of crossword puzzles, and she took pride in her work at IBM before dedicating herself to raising her children. Through every chapter of her life, Hilda inspired those around her with her compassion, creativity, and unwavering devotion to family and friends.

She is survived by her children, John Hawkins, Heather (Craig) Murray, and David (Billie) Hawkins and twelve cherished grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Durwood Hawkins; her parents, Byron and Leota Taylor; her older sisters, Barbara Hartsuff and Elizibeth Eaton, and granddaughter, Ashley Hawkins.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Okemos Community Church or the World Wildlife fund.

Services were held on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at Okemos Community Church.
