Comments about life and living

Right after graduating from OHS, Bob Dee and Ijoined the National Guard and headed off to Ft. Knox,
KY for basic training. We were trained in artillery at Ft. Sill, OK, then finished our National
Guard duty in the Lansing artillery unit.
Following five years at MSU (where I minored in human relations at Coral Gables) I finally did
graduate with a degree in biology and education as well as pre-med. After one year of teaching jr.
high in Southfield, I attended Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Currently I am retired after a 37-year career in emergency medicine at Botsford Hospital, a
teaching hospital in Farmington Hills, MI. This was interesting and challenging work and included
much interaction with doctors in training. I worked almost exclusively the night shift by choice,
as I got to see my kids more that way, and I actually liked it better than working days. Also,
there were more interesting characters and way better stories from the night shift!
It was eye-opening to watch the rise in numbers of female physicians during my career. In 1970,
women made up about 10% of the medical students and graduates. Just 40 years later women constitute about 50% of graduating physicians.
I have four great kids, four precious grandchildren, and a sweet four-year-old Labradoodle, Nellie.
Hobbies include music, golf, gardening, snow shoveling and lawn mowing. Now living southeast
of Brighton, next to the Huron River. After all these years, Linda Miller and I have rekindled the
good friendship we had at OHS.

Favorite Memories:
-The fun of the old high school with hallways and stairs so crowded between classes.
-Having an older brother who helped me learn the ropes, and a younger brother to pound on.
- The soda fountain at Grettenberger Drugs with the Green Rivers and Vanilla Cokes.
-All the fun of a really small town where you knew everybody!
- The tiny old gym where you could play a whole game of basketball and not get tired 'cause you
didn't have to run very far...and where the seating capacity was only about 200, half of which was
the stage at the far end of the gym.
-Knowing some kids all the way from kindergarten through 12th grade and having friendships that
continue to this day.
-Watching the fight between Duffy Martin and Gordon Lyons in 7th grade... ouch!
-Going from a traditional "old school" to the new high school - a school of the future.... Strange!
- (Later) seeing movies like American Graffiti and thinking: "That's what it was like when we
were in high school!"

(Bob died suddenly of a heart attack on Aug. 1, 2012, a few weeks after he wrote this.)
