CRASH KILLS YOUTH, 17

MICHAEL HILLEY, OKEMOS, 8TH TRAFFIC VICTIM; INJURED MAN DIES

Michael Hilley, an Okemos high school student, became the city's eighth traffic fatality Wednesday night and a Lansing man, Robert T. Tellschow, 56, injured Saturday in a crash north of the city, died Thursday in a local hospital.

Hilley, 17, son of an East Lansing realtor, was fatally injured here late Wednesday evening, police said, when his car left the roadway and struck a tree in the 100 block of E. North st.  It was the eighth traffic fatality of the year for the city.

Hilley was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn H. Hilley, 1460 Oscoda dr., Okemos.  The youth died in a local hospital at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, 11 hours after the accident.

Police said his companion, Dallas Murray, 19, of 2848 S. Hagadorn rd., East Lansing, suffered multiple cuts and abrasions in the crash.  He was treated at Edward W. Sparrow hospital and transferred to the Mason General hospital where attendants said the boy was in good condition.

HIT TREE

According to police, young Hilley was driving east on North st. and failed to make a slight curve.  The car jumped the curb and traveled 66 feet, crashing into a tree.  The impact caused the car to bound backward 15 feet.

Murray told police he didn't know what caused the accident.  A broken jaw and injuries to the head and other parts of Hilley's body were blamed for his death.

Michael was a member of the naval reserve and was scheduled to leave here Sunday for a two week training at the Great Lakes Naval Training station.

He was a junior at Okemos high school where he was active in school affairs.  His father is president of Hilley, Inc., Realtors, of East Lansing.

Surviving, beside the parents, are two sisters, Patsy Joan, a student at Michigan State University, and Kathleen, a sophomore at Okemos high school; the grandparents, Anno Boersma, who lives with the family, and Mr. and Mrs. William Hilley of Bradenton, Fla., and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Maude King of Benzonia.

The body was taken to the Estes-Leadley funeral home.  Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Okemos Community church.  Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery here.
