Merwin Verlyn (possibly Verlynne) Monroe, son of Theron I. (1889-1979) and Julia Mildred (Purdy) (1892-1999), was born 18 July 1911 in Webberville, Ingham County, Michigan. Merwin graduated from Western State Teachers College (now Western Michigan University) in 1934 with a B.S. degree. He married Cora Kruithof 20 October 1934 in Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan. The marriage certificate listed Merwin's occupation as teacher.

OKEMOS SCHOOL NEWS
Merwin Monroe of Hemlock began teaching in the manual arts department, replacing Hugh Bartley who left before vacation. Mr. Monroe and his family have moved into the Kirkpatrick house east of town. He is working on his master's degree at Michigan State college forenoons and teaching at the school afternoons.
Further State Journal articles report Merwin, in 1944-45, teaching physical education and coaching and, during the 1946-47 school year, was named agriculture and shop instructor. Merwin left Okemos School in the late 40's but continued with his teaching career. He also owned and operated a farm in Eaton County.

FIRE RAZED EATON BARN
SIX CALVES, 1,000 BALES OF STRAW BURN AT MERWIN MONROE FARM
Charlotte, Sept. 26 - Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a barn, 1,000 bales of straw and six calves at the Merwin Monroe farm, six miles northeast of here in Eaton township, Friday evening. Workers led 14 other calves to safety.
Firemen said Monroe and his wife were away from home at the time of the blaze. A teenage son and daughter had done the evening chores, they said, prior to the time neighbors discovered the flames about 6:30 p.m.
Loss in the fire was estimated by firemen at $5,000, and was reported partly covered by insurance. The Charlotte fire department answered the alarm.
In retirement years the Monroe's moved to Florida. Cora, born 30 September 1909, died 21 October 1995 Sarasota County, Florida. Merwin succumbed 25 August 2003 Florida. The couple were interred Palms Memorial Park, Sarasota, Sarasota County.
