MOTOR BIKE RIDER DIES IN ACCIDENT

CARL H. LAFARGE, 26, IS THROWN FROM CYCLE AND STRUCK BY TRUCK

The operator of a motorized-bicycle was fatally injured at 8:25 o'clock Wednesday night when thrown from the vehicle under the wheels of a truck-tractor at the Pere Marquette railroad crossing on East Mt. Hope road.  The victim of the tragic accident was Carl H. LaFarge, 26, of 916 Bensch street, who died two hours and five minutes after the accident at Edward W. Sparrow hospital.

The young man is the adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. LaFarge, who operate the LaFarge Kennels on highway US-16 east of East Lansing.

His widow, Nancy, left Lansing by automobile Tuesday noon and is en route to Tucson, Ariz. to visit relatives.  State police were making attempts to intercept her along the route to inform her of her husband's death.

The victim was a graduate of Okemos high school and attended Michigan State college for a year prior to entering the army air corps at the outbreak of hostilities in the recent war.  He served five years in the air corps and was discharged with a captain's rank.

LaFarge was employed in the electrical department of Michigan state college at the time of his death.

State police, who investigated the accident, said the truck-tractor was driven by Paul Newman, 36, R. 3, Williamston.  Officers said Newman attempted to avoid hitting LaFarge, but he could not bring the vehicle to a halt before the rear wheels of the trailer had crushed his body.

Newman told state police that LaFarge apparently lost control of the motor-bicycle on hitting the railroad crossing, throwing him backward into the path of the following truck-tractor.  Both vehicles were traveling eastward.

The victim's brother-in-law, George Warren, 12 of Hatch road, was accompanying LaFarge on another motorbike and had crossed the railroad tracks without difficulty ahead of LaFarge, state police reported.

Coroner Harry E. Leadley also investigated the accident.

LaFarge's body was removed to the Estes-Leadley funeral home, pending completion of funeral arrangements.

Beside the parents and widow, Mr. LaFarge is survived by a brother, Wilbur McCarrick; three sisters, Ora Maine of Mason, Mrs. Frances Forner and Mrs. Evelyn Campbell both of Lansing.

Nancy, Carl's widow, remarried a Mr. Brandon and bore a daughter.  Nancy, born 26 February 1926, died 19 July 2008.  According to her 20 July 2008 obituary in the Lansing State Journal, Nancy led a very full life.  "She worked at the New York Central Railroad for 15 years and Waldo travel for 25 years.  This allowed her to travel all over the world.  She learned to fly in 1952 and earned her private pilot's license.  Then she went on to earn her commercial license and multi-engine rating.  In the 60's and 70's, she belonged to the 99's women's pilot club and flew in several of their small races.

Nancy LaFarge-Brandon was buried near Carl in Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing.
