Ruth Irene Woodworth (Howes) - Class Of 1941

Ruth Irene Woodworth, daughter of Philo Rockwell (1880-1947) and Nettie (Spross) (1881-1952) Woodworth, was born 21 September 1923 Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan.  She was a 1941 graduate of Okemos High School.  Ruth married Roland Campbell Howes 22 June 1945 Lansing, Ingham County.

HOWES - Roland C. Howes, electrician's mate second class has reported to a United States submarine base in New London, Conn., recently after completing several successful war patrols aboard a United States submarine in the Pacific area.  Mr. Howes is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Howes, 817 West Ottawa street.  Graduating from Haslett high school in 1941, Howes joined the navy in August, 1942, and volunteered for immediate duty with a submarine.

MARRIED SATURDAY

Before an altar banked with white carnations, orange blossoms, and silver candelabra holding tall white tapers, Miss Ruth Irene Woodworth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philo Woodworth of Okemos, repeated marriage vows with Roland Campbell Howes, navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Howes, 817 West Ottawa street, at St. Paul's Episcopal church Saturday afternoon.  Rev. Charles Braidwood of Lapeer performed the service, assisted by Rev. George Selway.

The bride wore a gown of white marquisette with a high neckline edged with seed pearls.  The full skirt extended into a long train and a fingertip veil fell from a tiara of orange blossoms.  The bride carried a white prayer book topped with an orchid.  Mrs. Redmond Cotter of East Bridgewater, Mass., was her sister's matron of honor in a gown of orchid lace with cap sleeves and a full skirt.  Her calot and gloves were of matching shade, and she carried Johanna Hill roses and yellow daisies.  Miss Jean Howes, sister of the  bridegroom, was maid of honor in a pale green eyelet gown, with matching accessories.  Her bouquet was of talisman roses and white daisies.  Ann Grettenberger was her aunt's flower girl in a long dress of yellow net over peach taffeta.  She carried a basket of rose petals.

Franklin Howes attended this brother, and seating the 150 guests were Clarence Hargrave, jr., Jim Flood of Haslett, Robert Howes, and Ralph Gould of Jamestown, N. Y.  Mrs. Clarence Hargrave, jr., sang during the service, and Mrs. Evelyn Shawman was at the organ.

Mrs. Woodworth was in a black and white dressmaker suit with black accessories, with a corsage of talisman roses and white carnations.  The mother of the bridegroom was in a sheer black and pink floral print with a similar corsage.

The Woodworth home was the scene of a reception following the ceremony, at which Mrs. Chris Breithaupt and Miss Billie Collins of Lapeer presided.  Assisting were Mrs. Ruben Everett, Miss Monabelle Everett, and Miss Joan Everett.

The couple left for a wedding trip through the north, and will return to Lansing July 1.  They will leave for San Diego, Cal, July 8, where the bridegroom is stationed.  The bride is a graduate of Michigan state college, where she was affiliated with Omicron Nu and Kappa Delta Pi.

Ruth died 7 November 2004 Ingham County.  Roland died 20 July 2010 Genesee County, Michigan.  They were interred Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Oakland County, Michigan.

HOWES, RUTH IRENE

FORMERLY OF MASON, MI

Born in Okemos, MI, on September 21, 1923; died November 7, 2004.  Mrs. Howes graduated from Okemos High School and Michigan State College Magna Cum Laude in 1945.  She taught in the Lapeer, Mattawan and Mason school systems.  Mrs. Howes is survived by her husband of 58 years, Roland Howes; daughter, Mary (Jim) Nye of Howell, MI; son, James Rockwell (Sarah) Howes of Bellingham, WA; 5 beautiful granddaughters, Julie, Kalie, Megan, Chelsea and Rosanne; sister, Edna Cotter of East Lansing; and several nieces and nephews.  Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, November 10, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 218 W. Ottawa, Lansing, with the Rev. Dr. Gordon F. Weller and the Rev. Dr. Ruth Stang, of St. John's Episcopal Church, Howell, officiating.

ROLAND CAMPBELL HOWES

FLINT

Age 87, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at McLaren Regional Medical Center.

Cremation has taken place.  A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Central Church of the Nazarene, G1261 West Bristol Road, Flint Township.  The family will receive visitors 10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the church before the service.  Pastor Dave Hintz officiating.

Burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery at a later date.  Since Roland was such a giving man, a donation to your favorite charity in his memory in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.

Roland was born in East Lansing, MI on March 3, 1923, to Luther and Lillian Howes.  He graduated from Haslett High school where he played basketball and baseball.  His love of golf was born when he worked as a caddy at Walnut Hills Golf Club in high school.  He also enjoyed Michigan state hockey and was a former president of the Blue Line Club.  Roland joined the Navy in 1941 and served six years in the Submarine Service and made five war patrols on two different boats, the USS Whale and the USS Capitaine.  He was a life member of U.S. Submarine Veterans, WWII and Subvets, Inc.  After discharge, he attended Western Michigan University, then opened his company Howes Refrigeration Equipment Sales and Service in Mason specializing in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning.
