Lee Parkhurst - Class Of 1961

Lee Parkhurst

Lee Charles Parkhurst, son of Charles King (1903-1976) and Marion Belle (Lockwood) (1907-1995) Parkhurst, was born 21 February 1943 Michigan.  He was a 1961 graduate of Okemos High School.  Lee was killed in an auto accident 1 November 1964 Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.  He was interred Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason, Ingham County.

A 22-year-old Okemos man and a four-year-old Okemos girl were killed in accidents Sunday.

The crash that killed the Okemos man ws called "the worst accident I have ever seen" by Coroner Jack Holmes.

The victims were Lee Charles Parkhurst, 2379 E. Mt. Hope Road and......  Parkhurst was killed instantly when his convertible struck a foot-thick steel pole supporting a traffic signal at Cavanaugh Road and South Cedar Street about 1:25 a.m.

Lansing police said witnesses estimated Parkhurst's car was traveling more than 100 miles an hour when it went off the road, struck a speed sign and flew, top first, into the steel pole.

The rear section of the car wrapped around the pole.

The front portion of the car containing the victim skidded 142 feet across Cavanaugh Road, into a gasoline station service area.

Coroner Holmes said Parkhurst died instantly of an open skull fracture and crushing injuries.

Parkhurst was married and had one child.  A graduate of Okemos High School and Lansing Business University, he was an accountant at the Lansing Cutstone Co.

Funeral services for Parkhurst will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Estes-Leadley Colonial Chapel.  Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen; a son, James; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles K. Parkhurst, Okemos; a brother, Donald of Okemos and a grandmother, Mrs. E. A. Lockwood, Bay City.
