BERNIE HAGUE, BIBLICAL SCRIBE

Bernie Harold Hague, who copied the Bible 19 times by hand, died Wednesday.  He was 86.

Hague, who retired in 1989 from Uniloy in Saline, went beyond the challenge his minister made in 1960 to read the entire Bible that year.  He copied it, word for word, in a little more than a year.

Writing the words was such a good way to study the Bible, Hague continued his hobby and used up 503 pens and nearly 17,000 pieces of paper over the course of 24 years.

"He challenged me back in 1965 and I got to the 23rd chapter of Genesis," said his daughter, Pamela Sims.  "He did it year after year and it was a form of study."

Several of his copies are displayed in churches in Michigan and Florida and the Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

"He's the only one in the world who's ever done it." Sims said.

Hague was born Sept. 13, 1906 in Stockbridge and graduated from Adrian College.  He lived in Onsted for many years before moving to Bradenton, Fla. in 1978.  He returned to Michigan in 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Esther, two daughters, Nancie, of Onsted and Pamela Sims of Lansing; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Robert Ostrander of Lady Lake, Fla.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Onsted Baptist Church.  Interment will follow at Roseland Cemetery in Jackson.
