Joyce Mae Sweet (Rutz) - Class Of 1951

Joyce Mae Sweet, daughter of Emerson Gross (1910-1966) and Beatrice (Bergh) (1910-1998) Sweet, was born 14 October 1933, Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.  She graduated in 1951 from Okemos High School.

Mr. and Mrs. Emerson G. Sweet and daughter, Joyce Mae, are spending a two weeks' vacation at Long Lake, Traverse City.

Joyce married Roger Eugene Anderson 4 October 1952, Okemos Community Church, Okemos, Ingham County. Roger, born 26 March 1930, died 3 January 2015.  They had 2 children.  Joyce married Layo Judson "L. J." Rutz in April 1980.  L. J., born 17 October 1928, died 6 February 2012.

Joyce was employed by Albion College for over 3 decades.  She died 3 January 2009, Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan.

JOYCE MAE ANDERSON RUTZ

ALBION

Joyce Mae Anderson Rutz, age 75, of Albion, passed away January 3, 2009 at her residence.  She was born October 13, 1933 in Lansing, Michigan to Emerson Gross and Beatrice (Bergh) Sweet.  She move to Okemos at age 10, she graduated from Okemos High School and attended Michigan State University.  She was married to Roger Anderson in 1952 and later married L.J. Rutz in April of 1980 in Albion.  She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Albion and served on the Vestry and the Episcopal Church Women.  She worked at Albion College for 32 years, 27 of which were in the History Department, retiring in 2001.  In 1993 she received a liver transplant and was active in the corresponding organizations.  She loved spending time with her family, gardening, and favorite dogs.

She is survived by her husband, L.J. of Albion; 1 daughter, Lynn K. (Delano) Kreger of Homer; 1 son, Christopher (Cyndi) Anderson of Albion; 1 stepson, Jay L. (Becky) Rutz of Little Rock, AK; 3 grandchildren, Allison and Shawn Anderson and Brooke Rutz; 1 sister, Kay (Don) Volz of Thousand Oaks, CA; and 1 brother, John (Sherry) Sweet of Dimondale.  She was preceded in death by her parent and a stepdaughter, Beth Rutz.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and she has gone on to walk with her Lord and Savior.
