With so much of high school being spent preparing for college, it's no wonder that Okemos School District has hired Ira Childress as the new athletic director for the high school.
Childress spent three years working for the NCAA before starting his own business, Childress Sports Consulting, which focuses on taking about leadership, education, social media and recruiting with high school and college athletes.
"That company was built on understanding the importance of education and athletics," Childress said.
This summer, Childress will take over as athletic director at Okemos for Bob Bullock, who is returning to the middle school level.
As a Baldwin High School graduate and former football player and administrator at Ferris State, he knows the Michigan sports scene well.
After discussions with the athletic director at Traverse City Central, Childress decided he wanted to get involved on the high school level and found a match in Okemos.
''My goal is first and foremost is to maintain the program and commitment to excellence that they've had at Okemos," Childress said. "The school was really intriguing to me because of its good track record academically and also athletically."
Childress knows that Okemos is already in a good place. "I want to help Okemos go from good to great," Childress said. "We can be even better. That's my big picture goal."
