Naomi E. Wilkins (Whitmyer) - Class Of 1928 VIEW PROFILE

Naomi E. Wilkins, daughter of Irvin Amhearst (1876-1958) and Lottie Althea (Hewitt) (1878-1968) Wilkins, was born 22 December 1910, Alaiedon Township, Ingham County, Michigan.  Naomi graduated in 1928 from Okemos High School.  She married John Freeman Whitmyer 19 March 1932, Ingham County.  John was also a 1928 graduate of Okemos High.

John owned and ran the Okemos Elevator in Okemos for over 20 years.  He and Naomi, staunch Republicans, were involved in local politics.  John was elected and served in several Meridian Township  positions

s over the years.  Naomi was elected for 3 terms as Treasurer of Meridian Township and was well known for her volunteer work in the community.  She and John raised 4 children, all graduates of Okemos High.


John, born 9 August 1910, died 17 March 1999.  Naomi died 23 August 2004.  They were interred together Leek Cemetery, Okemos.

WHITMYER, NAOMI W.

OKEMOS AND WILLIAMSTON, MI

Age 93, died August 23, 2004.  Born December 22, 1910 in Alaiedon Township, MI.  Mrs. Whitmyer was the first female elected officer, Treasurer, of Meridian Township, 1951-1955.  She volunteered for Ingham Medical Extended Care Facility and Sparrow Hospital through her sewing and knitting skills.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, John F.; daughter Nancy C. Bengston; grandson, Jeffrey D. Whitmyer and great-great-granddaughter, Jaden Knechtges.  Surviving are 3 sons, John I. (Jack) of Lake (formerly of Okemos), Donald of Southfield and Kenneth G. (Karen) of Haslett; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Rex O. Wilkins of Toppinabee.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 18, 11:00 a.m. at the Williamston United Methodist Church, 211 S. Putnam, Williamston with the Rev. Dean N. Prentiss, Pastor, officiating.
