George W. Heathman - Class Of 1934

George W. Heathman, son of Walter James (1878-1968) and Dottie D. (Allen) (1880-1965) Heathman, was born 29 May 1916, Ingham County, Michigan.  He graduated in 1934 from Okemos High School.  George married Jeanette M. Painter 27 August 1938, Lansing, Ingham County.

Miss Jeanette Painter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Painter of 2508 Clifton avenue, became the bride of George Heathman of Okemos, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Heathman, also of Okemos, Saturday afternoon at the parsonage of the Mt. Hope Methodist church.  The Rev. Thomas Brownlow, pastor of the church, performed the ceremony.

Miss Letha Nimphic of Lansing and Walter Soderman, also of this city, attended the couple.

After a wedding trip to northern Michigan, Mr. and Mrs. Heathman, will be at home to their friends about September 3 at 527 Christiancy street.

 

George joined and honorably served in the US Navy towards the end of World War II.

BEESON, DANES, HEATHMAN -

Three Lansing sailors served aboard the light cruiser, U.S.S. Montpelier in the Pacific, when she helped remove more than 2,600 liberated prisoners of war from Wakayama, Honshu, Japan.  The Montpelier was the flagship for Rear Admiral Ralph S. Riggs, commander of the evacuation unit.  the Lansing men serving aboard this ship were: Arthur W. Beeson, seaman first class, 517 Park boulevard; Herbert O. Danes, water teneder, second class, R. 10 and George W. Heathman, seaman first class, 4729 North East street.

George and Jeanette were married 59 years and raised 5 children.  George died 12 May 1998, Ingham County.  Jeanette, born 22 June 1915, Midland County, Michigan, died 15 July 2007, Michigan.  They were interred Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason, Ingham County.

Age 81, passed away at home on May 12, 1998,  born May 20, 1916, to Dottie and Walter Heathman in Alaiedon Township, Ingham County, MI.  He had retired from the Board of Water and Light, was a World War II veteran who served on the Montpelier, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Mr. Heathman was preceded in death by siblings, James Heathman, Alice Risk, Ruth Hubbard; son, George E. Heathman; and daughter, Linda Heathman.  He married Jeanette Painter in 1938 and had 5 children.  Surviving are his wife, Jeanette; children, Sandra (John) Alexander, Jerry (Carolyn) Heathman, Mary Heathman Lamb; 9 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  Cremation has taken place.  Memorial services will be held Friday, May 15, 4 p.m. at great Lakes Christian Home, 2050 S. Washington, Holt, with the Rev. Robert Palmer officiating.
