Martin A. "Marty" Ross - Class Of 1969 VIEW PROFILE

Martin A. Marty Ross

Martin A. "Marty" Ross, son of Ronald Gale (1931-1961) and Mintory Madgelene "Madge" (Romans) (1933-2000) Ross, was born in 1950. He attended Okemos High with the Class of 1969.  Marty was active on the junior varsity and varsity OHS football teams.  He also was honored as the male sophomore representative on the Fall of '66 OHS Homecoming Court.

Marty's parents were married 29 April 1950, Ingham County.  His mother recorded the name "Madge Elaine Romans" on the marriage license.  The couple had 2 sons and a daughter.  Madge and Ronald were divorced in 1956 (Lansing State Journal 2 November 1956).  Marty's father Ronald, born 15 December 1931, took his own life, via carbon monoxide poisoning, 1 July 1961.  Madge, born 23 November 1933, used 5 different and combination surnames; Romans, Ross, Losen, Mintori, Sparks, Ellsworth.  Social Security Applications and Claims listed her death on 1 December 2000.

Marty died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds 2 March 1968.  He was laid to rest near his father in Bowne Center Cemetery, also known as Bowne Township Cemetery, Kent County, Michigan.

MARTIN A. ROSS

Martin A. Ross, 17, of 4394 Okemos Road, Okemos, died Saturday night of gunshot wounds which apparently were self-inflicted, according to the coroner Jack Holmes.

A lifelong resident of Lansing and Okemos area, Martin was a student at Okemos High School and played junior varsity and varsity football at Okemos High.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Madge M. Ross; a brother, Roland and a sister, Sheri Lyn, both at home; his grandparents, Alfred Hayhoe of Dimondale and Mr. and Mrs. William Ross of Lansing.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with burial in Bowne Center Cemetery, Alto.  Contributions may be made to the Martin A. Ross Scholarship Fund, Okemos High School.

Editor's Note: Marty's brother, Roland Dale Ross, born in 1952, died after a lingering illness, 30 September 1973, Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan.  He was 20 years old.  Roland too was interred Bowne Center Cemetery, Kent County.  Roland also may have attended Okemos Schools but was not found in any year book.
