Mary Sue Elg Blair class of 1954, 87, of Kentwood, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on June 2, 2023. Mary was born on January 23, 1936, in Pontiac, Michigan, to Charles and Evelyn Elg. She graduated from Okemos High School in 1954 and studied nursing at the West Suburban Nursing School in Oak Park, IL. She married her first husband, Roger Smith, in 1958, and they had three children, Cheryl, Stephen, and David. Roger passed away in 1989. In 1991, Mary married her second husband, Stu Blair, and gained a son, Eric, along with daughters Shari and Debra.
Mary worked as a registered nurse for over 25 years and was an employee of the State of Michigan at the end of her career. She was a compassionate and caring professional who touched many lives with her kindness and skill. Before moving to Grand Rapids, she spent many years in the Michigan communities of Lansing and Cheboygan and winters in Bradenton, Florida.
Mary was a lifelong Baptist and a current member of Kentwood Baptist Church. She was a faithful servant of God who reflected the light of Jesus to others.
Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She had a joyful spirit, a sense of humor, and a generous heart. She was known for her handwritten letters and notes of encouragement. She loved spending time with her family and friends and cherished every moment with them. She loved sewing, quilting, and playing cribbage (she always won) with friends and family.
Mary is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 32 years, Stu; his son Eric (Isabel) Blair; his daughters Shari (Robert) Wendland and Debra Golden; her daughter Cheryl (Robert) Smith; her son Stephen (Beth) Smith; her son David (Jennifer) Smith; and her grandchildren Katrina (Austin), Sarah (Jake), Karagan, Sinclare, Simon, Tamara, Joseph, Sean, and Kristen. She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Roger.
Mary's life will be celebrated at Kentwood Baptist Church, 2875 52nd St SE, Kentwood, MI 49508, Saturday, June 17th, 2023, at 3:00 pm with a visitation at the church from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary's name to Kentwood Baptist Church.
