Edward Frances "Eddie" Droughan - Class Of 1936

Edward Frances Eddie Droughan

Edward Frances "Eddie" Droughan, only child of Edward Frances and Mary Margurett Elizabeth (Haley) Droughan, was born 12 March 1918, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  Eddie's mother, born 20 December 1888, Burlington, Ontario Province, Canada, succumbed to influenza 14 January 1920.  She was interred Greenwood Cemetery, Chicago.  Eddie lived with his father for a spell but when his father returned to Ontario for work Eddie went to live with his mother's childless relatives, Perle and Nettie Haley in Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan.

Eddie's father, born 3 June 1883, Ontario, remarried and had 5 children with his second wife.  He died of lobar pneumonia 3 December 1929, Ontario and was interred Hold Sepulcher Catholic Cemetery, Burlington.

Eddie was raised by the Haley's and graduated in 1936 from Okemos High School.  He attended Acme business college and, according to the 1940 US Federal Census, completed 3 years.  Eddie joined the US Army 1 April 1941.

OKEMOS MAN RAISED TO CORPORAL'S RANK

Corp. Edward F. Droughan has been promoted to his new rank from that of private at Chanute filed, Rantoul, Ill., it has been learned here by Mr. and Mrs. P. T. Haley of Okemos with whom he has made his home.

Corporal Droughan recently graduated form the technical air corps school at For Logan, Col.   After spending a furlough here, he was sent to Canute field for service.

Having graduated from the air corps technical school at Fort Logan, Color., Corp. Edward F. Droughan his now stationed at Chanute Field, Ill.   He is a graduate of Okemos high school and attended Acme business college.  He recently visited his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. P. T. Haley of Okemos.

Eddie never married and little is known about his adult life.  He had enlisted in the regular US Army in 1941 and was discharged in 1945.  According to family genealogy he continued to live in Germany, his last military assignment, for a while after discharge and then returned stateside to live in San Francisco.  He re-enlisted into the US Air Force in 1948 and served until 1955.  Eddie had a public address for a residence in Idaho during the 1970's.

In July 1984 Eddie was admitted to a Veteran's Administration Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.  He remained there until his death from lung cancer 30 September 1984.  His body was donated to research.
