Lottie L. Cook, daughter of Herman (1840-1913) and Ruth (McMillan) (1847-1920) Cook, was born in Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan, 7 October 1872. Lottie's father was a meat butcher and dealer in Okemos for many years. He was well known to numerous innkeepers in the county.

Lottie was a pupil at Okemos Union School in 1888. She was well acquainted with her school mate Henry Frederick Wellman, Jr. and so much so that the two married, 20 May 1896. Henry, born 8 October 1871, Ingham County, was like his father before him, a farmer. Not long after he married Lottie, Henry became politically active in Meridian Township and was elected to the County Board of Supervisors.

The young Wellman's welcomed into their home a set of fraternal twins in 1899, Lucile Esther and Paul Lester. Twins were unusual in that day and time. Another child, a daughter, was born in 1902. Unfortunately, at Christmas 1913, Henry became ill and on 2 January 1914 he succumbed to pneumonia in his home. Henry was interred Glendale Cemetery, Okemos.

Lottie was active in several ladies' clubs in Okemos, including Eastern Star. She sold the farm after Henry's death and moved herself and the children into a home on Grand River Avenue in East Lansing. Lottie survived without Henry only 11 years. At age 52 she succumbed to cancer, 15 January 1925, East Lansing. She was interred next to Henry in Glendale Cemetery.
