Chester Foman Davis was the son and only child of Theodore F. (1845-1922) and Mary M. (Barnes) (1847-1877) Davis. Chester, born 29 August 1877, Meridian Township, Ingham County, Michigan lost his mother to typhoid fever less than 4 months after he was born. Mr. Davis, a lumberman by occupation, turned Chester over to his deceased wife's parents to be raised.

The 1880 Ingham County, Michigan US Federal Census enumerated Chester, age 2, living with maternal grandparents, Ezekiel and Olive Barnes, within the village of Okemos. Grandfather Ezekiel was an innkeeper. The family living next door to the elder Barnes' were Alfred and Dell Barnes. Alfred was Ezekiel and Olive's son. Alfred and Dell possibly took Chester in when his grandfather Ezekiel committed suicide in January 1884 and then his grandmother died December 1884. What is known is that Chester was an enrolled student in the Okemos Union school in 1888. He remained living in Meridian Township during his formative years.

Chester married Miss Ethel Dora Kent, 16 August 1899, Ingham County. Ethel, an Ingham County native, was born 23 February 1883. In 1910 Chester was employed as a US Post Office rural mail carrier. On his World War I draft registration Chester listed his employment as an inspector for Detroit United Railway. By 1920 he was working in the wholesale grocery business. Chester and Ethel lived in Haslett, Ingham County, for many years. They couple raised boys, 3 of the 4 living to adulthood. They lost one very young son in 1922.

On 19 October 1936, Chester succumbed to heart disease at his home in Haslett. Ethel died twenty-seven years later, 9 June 1963, Ingham County. Chester and Ethel were interred Glendale Cemetery, Okemos.
