Charles Augustus "Charlie" Ferguson was born into a distinguished Meridian Township, Ingham County family. His father, Dr. Augustus Ferguson (1847-1908) settled in Okemos along with a brother who also was an MD, and was a practicing physician and surgeon, owned two successful local farms of 120 acres and 40 acres, and was a partner in John Ferguson & Sons, a general merchandise business in Okemos. As a side interest the Doctor too raised and bred fine Hambletonian racehorses. Dr. Ferguson was twice elected by majority to the Michigan House of Representatives where he served on numerous committees; Mines and Minerals, Northern Asylum for Insane, Public Health, Municipal Corporations, School of Mines and Special Committee on Detroit House of Correction.

Charlie, whose parents in 1870 settled in Okemos, was born 10 May 1875. His mother was Kathrine "Kate" Hammond (1849-1916). She and the good doctor married in 1869. The couple had two sons, Charlie and Robert Earl (1885-1954). Charlie was enrolled at the Okemos Union School in 1888. He went on to further his education and to play pro-baseball, spending most of his professional days with American Association in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota leagues. Charlie was a right-handed pitcher. He later umpired pro-ball games.

Married twice, Charlie had no children. His first wife was Anna Grace McGhee, born 6 June 1881, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. The couple married 19 August 1898, Essex, Ontario Province, Canada. They were divorced in Ingham County, Michigan, 4 October 1902. Charlie then wed 24 February 1903, Ramsey County, Minnesota, Miss Anna Roers. Anna, born of Dutch parents, came into this world 23 November 1876, St. Paul, Ramsey County. She would be a faithful follower of Charlie as he ended his ball career and moved back to Ingham County where he delved into area real estate sales. Charlie seemingly was never far from a baseball field or a conversation about baseball.

Although for several years Charlie was a empire in the big leagues, on his return to Lansing he was most a most enthusiastic endorser of the Lansing Athletic Association, umpiring and promoting amateur baseball. He was also very involved with Elks Lodge and, to add to the list of his interests, breeding and showing Pointers. His kennels and show awards were well known.

On 17 May 1931 three men, Charlie, a cousin John Ferguson and business associate Millard Hootman, went on a much-planned fishing trip at Whitefish Bay, Chippewa County, Michigan, on the shores of Lake Superior. It was recommended to the party of men that they should use a larger craft if they intended on motoring into the Bay, but the idea was rejected due to the size of boat motor they had brought along. Nothing more was seen or heard of the three and a known squall had descended soon after they had departed from shore. Michigan State Police, Chippewa Sheriff's Department, Coast Guard and locals all searched waters and shoreline along the Bay area. An airplane was also deployed in the search. The overturned boat, without motor was located and days later, June 13th, Charlie's body was found and identified. His remains were the last of the 3-man fishing party recovered from the icy waters of the Bay known as the graveyard of the Great Lakes.

Charlie was interred Mt. Hope Cemetery, Ingham County. Anna, who took over Charlie's real estate business, Ferguson Real Estate Company, died 21 June 1955, Ingham County. She too was interred Mt. Hope Cemetery.
