Mildred Mae "Millie" Glines was a student at Okemos Union School in 1888. Her parents, Mark (1842-1905) and Cornelia "Nellie" (Green) (1851-1928) Glines had moved to Meridian Township, Ingham County, Michigan as newlyweds. About the time of Millie's birth, 28 November 1874, her father Mark went into the truck or market gardening business, growing, picking and selling his variety of produce to locals either at a market, store or from the back of his wagon. Mark's produce was not only from the ground, such as fresh vegetables, potatoes, carrots but also, he had planted fruit trees. His delicious peaches were well known in the area.

Millie married Dr. David William Roberts, 12 May 1892, Ingham County. The couple set up their household in Holt, where the doctor began his medical practice. In 1907 the David and Millie, now with 2 children, Ruth born 1899 and Russell born in 1904, moved to Okemos. The doctor ran his medical practice out of his home near the corner of Okemos and Hamilton Roads. It was there in 1907 the 3rd and youngest child, Mildred, was born.

Dr. Roberts, by the 1920's, was also attending weekly, and on emergency basis, the Ingham County Poor Farm inmates. He continued with his private practice but was also active on the Board of Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. David and Millie's children married during that decade. Ruth married a Pastor, Rev. Forest Roscoe Witmer. Russell followed his father into the medical field, becoming first a general practitioner and later specializing in ophthalmology. He too married. Mildred, the youngest child, married in 1929 and then would teach school in Okemos for over 30 years.

Millie's household was bereft of children, but she took in her sister, Edith Glines, during the 1930's. Edith, who remained single, had a long teaching career in Ingham County. In 1950 David retired from practicing medicine. Health became an issue for both David and Millie. David, born 29 July 1866, Shiawassee County, Michigan, died 16 June 1953, Okemos. Millie was bedridden at the time of David's passing. She died 19 December 1954, Okemos. David and Millie were interred Glendale Cemetery, Okemos.

NOTE:  Mildred, the youngest Roberts child, married John McKinley who later became a Postmaster for the Okemos USPS.  Mildred would teach Kindergarten classes at Okemos for many years and of of her many students was this particular writer.  I loved "Mrs. McKinley"!  She had a real infinity for small children.  I still remember her gentle hands band-aiding my knee after a fall on the playground.  And she often helped me unroll my "nap mat" and assisted me later in putting it away in my assigned wall cubicle.  Always endlessly attentive, gentle and kind, Mrs. McKinley left a deep inpression on this little 5-year-old!
