Emma L. Grettenberger (Pease) - Class Of 1888

Emma L. Grettenberger, daughter of Karl Charles Friedrich (1840-1922) and Elizabeth Cath (Sattler) (1849-1921) Grettenberger, was born in June 1876. Carl Grettenberger was a German immigrant to the United States, coming by ship in the 1840's, settling in Michigan and marrying Elizabeth Sattler in 1870.

Emma, her sister Mary and a brother Charles were all students in the Okemos Union School in 1888. Emma would compete a 7th grade education.

On 27 June 1900, Okemos, Ingham County, Emma married George Klunzinger. George was a harness maker later going into the poultry business. Born 10 December 1866 in Michigan, George succumbed in his Williamston, Ingham County home to tuberculosis, 10 August 1915. He was interred Summit Cemetery, Williamston. The marriage union produced no children.

Benjamin Franklin Pease was a well-known railroad man in the Lansing area. Ben had been a Michigan National Guardsman during the early years of the 20th century. In 1900 Ben married Anna Marie Augusta Guenther. According to his World War I Draft Registration, dated 12 September 1918, Ben was employed as a Switchman for Michigan Central Railroad. He was described as tall, stout with blue eyes and black hair.

Anna Marie Pease died in 1922, have borne no children. Ben and Emma married 7 March 1923, Ingham County. Ben and his first wife had lived on Pennsylvania Avenue in Lansing but after marrying Emma, the newlyweds moved to Grand River, Okemos and lived there for over 20 years.

Ben passed away 2 April 1945 of a heart attack. He was interred Maple Ridge Cemetery, Holt, near his 1st wife Anna Marie. Emma succumbed to heart disease and pneumonia 5 December 1946, East Lansing. She was interred near her first husband George in Summit Cemetery, Williamston.
