In Memoriam

Marie Catherine Grettenberger (Skinner) - Class Of 1888

The 1888 Okemos Union School roster included a young lady named Mary Grettenberger. Mary was actually Marie Catherine Grettenberger, born 1874, Michigan, daughter of German immigrant Karl Charles Friedrich (1840-1923) and Elizabeth Cath (Sattler) (1848-1921) Grettenberger. Mary was the middle child of three siblings.

Raised on a productive working farm in Meridian Township, Marie met and then married US Army veteran, Linnie or Linn Henry Skinner, 30 August 1899, Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan. Linn's father was a Michigan Civil War Union Veteran and Methodist preacher who had moved often over the decades since the War. Rev. Irving Henry Skinner was preaching at the ME Church in the Okemos area during the late 1890's, his last church ministry had been in Wyoming where the Reverend's wife died in 1889. Linn and 2 of his 3 brothers had followed his parents to Wyoming but after his mother's death Linn had journeyed to Salem, Oregon where he joined the Army. Linn, who spent 3 years in military service with E Company, 5th Artillery, based in the western United States, was discharged with an excellent record in 1894. His military discharge paper gave his physical description as 5'8" with blue eyes, light complexion and light-colored hair.

Linn and Marie moved from Michigan to California in the early years of their marriage. By 1910 Rev. Skinner, new wife, with Linn, Marie and the other brothers, Isaac and Jessie, were all working and living in the state of California.

Linn was employed in 1910 for the HR Tibbitts Paint Company in San Diego, San Diego County, California. By 1920 he was working on his own account as a carpenter. A newspaper article written in the San Diego Sun, dated December 1925, stated that Marie had initiated divorce proceedings against Linn after 26 years of marriage due to "neglecting her." The suit was dropped because the 12 April 1930 US Federal Census for San Diego County, California enumerated Linn and Marie owning a $3,000 mortgage free home, Linn self-employed as a carpenter, and Marie was employed as a practical nurse.

Marie died 7 September 1930 in San Diego. Linn, born 1871 in Wayne County, Michigan, lived until 19 April 1937, San Diego, California. Both were interred Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego. There were no children born of their marriage.
