In Memoriam

Edith C. Hewitt (Moore) - Class Of 1888

Edith C. Hewitt, born 8 March 1870, Alaiedon Township, Ingham County, Michigan was the daughter of 2 Ingham County pioneer famiiles, the Hewitts and the Brays. Her father, John P. Hewitt (1838-1902), was a 2nd generation farmer in Michigan. Her mother, Charlotte Louise Bray (1842-1915,) too was born into a Michigan pioneering family. Edith, and her siblings, were enrolled and attended Okemos Union School in 1888.

On 10 March 1895, Alaiedon Township, Edith married Howard W. Moore. Howard, born 29 July 1862, was a local farm boy, born and raised on a farm in Alaiedon Township. According to the US Federal Census from 1900 to 1940, Howard was a tenet famer, never owning the land he worked. Edith, typical of that era, was a busy farm wife, raising 2 daughters and a son.

Tragedy struck the Moore family, 9 February 1940. Daughter Fern's husband, John Slaugh, was driving on US 127 in 3 miles south of Mason, Ingham County with Edith, his mother-in-law, beside him in the front passenger seat. John's car hit a patch of ice, he lost control of the vehicle and the results were that both son-in-law John and Edith were killed in the head-on crash with a truck.

Widowed Howard Moore died, 20 May 1951, just over a year later, with heart problems. Howard and Edith were interred Glendale Cemetery, Okemos.
