In Memoriam

Fred John Kaiser - Class Of 1888

Fred John Kaiser was a lifelong Meridian Township farmer. Born 14 February 1876, Meridian Township, Ingham County, Michigan, Fred was one of the 8 children born to German immigrants Johann George (1832-1898) and Philippine Christine (Weissinger) (1848-1904) Kaiser. A 1918 World War I military draft registration form described Fred as a farmer who was tall, of medium build with brown eyes and brown hair. He completed 8th grade in the Okemos Union School and then went on to finish two years of high school education in Mason.

Fred married Melvina Ann Katherine Schroen in Washtenaw County, Michigan on 14 February 1901. Melvina too was a child of German immigrants. She was born 13 December 1876 in Washtenaw County, Michigan. In 1902 Fred and Melvina became the proud parents of a daughter, Melita. She was their only child. Melita, who never married, went on to teach at the School of the Blind, Lansing (now called Michigan School for the Blind) and then had a long career working at MAC, Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University).

Melvina died of heart disease 26 October 1930, Ingham County. Fred was still farming on his Meridian Township farm at that time. He married widow Marion Lucinda (Videto) Allen on 1 November 1934 in Indiana. Fred retired from farming and the newly married couple moved to Durand Street in East Lansing sometime between 1930 and 1940. Fred, age 75, died 20 January 1951, Lansing, Ingham County. Marion died 20 November 1953, Ingham County. Fred was interred with his first wife, Melvina, in Glendale Cemetery, Okemos.
