In Memoriam

Edna Belle Kirk - Class Of 1888

Edna Belle "Belle" Kirk, daughter of Henry (1842-1901) and Estella "Ella" (Olin) (1857-1943) Kirk, was born 8 July 1876, Wheatfield Township, Ingham County, Michigan. Belle's father Henry was a Civil War veteran of Company H, 26th Michigan Infantry. Henry, a farmer, was a widower with a young daughter when he met and married Ella Olin in 1875. He and Ella would have 6 children together, Belle being the oldest.

Belle was enrolled at the Okemos Union School in 1888 along with her older half-sister, Rosa. Rosa had lost her mother in 1871 and when her widowed father remarried 4 years later, she became a big sister to all the siblings to come. Belle, who never married, would always keep in touch with Rosa.

By 1900 Belle was an employed as a professional dressmaker. She even attended, for several years, the National Dressmaker's Association convention in Chicago, Illinois. By 1910 Belle was working as a bank clerk but within a short space of time went on to obtain, at the Lansing state capitol, a position in the Michigan Secretary of State office as a clerk, later as an auditor.

After her father's death in 1901, Belle lived with her mother and, during the 1930's, the household would increase with the presence of bachelor brother George. The threesome lived at 1026 Pine Street in Lansing. Belle seemingly retired from her auditor position within the Secretary of State Office by 1938 when she and her mother began yearly wintering in Florida. They had visited the state of Florida several times in the 1920's when Rosa who lived in the Miami area, had been alive. Rosa died in 1931. It was there in Florida, in 1942, that Ella too passed, and Belle thereafter seemingly desisted from those seasonal Florida visits.

George Kirk died in 1957. Belle passed away 31 July 1972, Lansing and was interred with parents and brother George in Glendale Cemetery, Okemos.
