In Memoriam

Evaline Or Alvia Kirkpatrick (Smith) - Class Of 1888

Edward James (1833-1913) and Mary Rebecca (Graham) (1843-1925) Kirkpatrick married in 1858, Ontario Province, Canada. Mary bore 11 children over the course of their marriage, 7 of whom lived to adulthood. The family migrated to Michigan around 1880, where Edward farmed for a living. Two of their daughters, “Agnes” and “Alvia” were listed for Union School, term 13 November 1887 through 9 March 1888, as attendees. Agnes (1875-1972) would go on to marry and be widowed twice, bare three children and become a teacher in Okemos and Williamston. The other sister's name, although recorded as Alvia, was also documented over time as Evaline. Evelina and Alva Lena. The Michigan Death Record registered her name as Evaline.

Little is known about this daughter of Edward and Mary. She wed Henry Smith at Okemos on 6 November 1895. Henry, a farmer, was born in Ingham County 6 July 1866. The young couple established their home in Okemos and Alvia died there, according to the Michigan Death Record, on “child birth and hemorrhage,” 12 August 1896, less than a year after she married. The record #1609, ledger page 402, showed Alvia under her maiden name of Kirkpatrick and not as Smith, although the ledger did document she was married at the time of death. Alvia was interred at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lansing under a simple tombstone with the inscription of “Elve Smith.”

Henry remarried but his second wife died in 1905. Thereafter he remained single. Henry was walking aside a road on the evening of 7 January 1939 when he was struck and killed by a passing automobile. He was interred Mt. Hope Cemetery.
