The oldest child in the McGiveron family was Lillian, born 21 August 1872 in what is now Locke Township, Ingham County. Daughter of William Harold (1842-1914) and Martha Loretta (Eggleston) (1854-1947) McGiveron, Lillie, as she was called, was a student at Okemos Union School during the year 1888. She married in Ingham County, 20 November 1890, Emery Monroe Babbitt.
Emery firmly established his family in the Haslett area of Ingham County where he believed in and worked the free enterprise system. Not only did her operate a general store, later turning it into a grocery store, but an elevator, an auto sales agency and too was an officer of the Haslett Bank. Emery became an elected Justice of the Peace and served as the Haslett postmaster for 5 years during the 1890's. On the gray side of commerce, Emery was also involved in unlicensed liquor sales. In 1907 he was caught, arrested, spent weeks in jail, plead guilty and was fined $596.00 over 800 barrels of beer. In 2026 that fine would amount to $21,363.43. He seemingly did not learn his lesson because a further Lansing State Journal news article, dated December 1931, recorded Emery being once again arrested and this time for violating prohibition laws with 103 pints of beer and 4 ½ quarts of whiskey being seized.

Lillie taught school in Locke township for two years before her marriage. She later was involved in a 1896 slander suit, her name being bandied about maliciously. The suit outcome is unknown. In the 1930's Lillie was raising and showing English Bull dogs. One of her top dogs, Marchioness of Dunston, actually won best at the Detroit dog show in 1931. Both Emery and Lillie were often mentioned in the Lansing State Journal news column under the heading, “Haslett.” They frequently had guests, traveled or were entertained by friends.

In between all the ventures and adventures in and around the Babbitt household, Emery and Lillie raised a son and daughter. Raymond Carlyle was born in 1893, died 1952, and Mildred Elaine, born 1908 and died 1995. Emery and Lillie celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary in 1940. Emery, a diabetic, sold his grocery store and died 16 January 1945 in Owosso, Shiawassee County. Lillie passed away 25 July 1951 also in Owosso. Both were interred Glendale Cemetery, Okemos.
